2005 marks the
fifty-seventh time the
Academy Award will be
presented for Outstanding Costume Design. The FIDM Museum & Galleries are
proud to present our 13th annual edition of The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition.
The garments in the Museum-Galleries represent the creativity and skill of the costume designer in creating the mood and aura of the period in which each film is set. Whether they are elegant embroideries and ruffles or gritty denims and fleece, costumes must fit the style and tone of the movie, requiring equal amounts of research, skill, and talent.
The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising salutes these multifaceted designers and their counterparts, and praises the meticulous research, the painstaking care in detail and design, and the enormous contribution that costume design makes to the film industry.
Thirteen years ago, with the help of the Costume Designers Guild, The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising debuted a groundbreaking exhibition honoring the incredible work of costume designers in the film industry. This modest first effort met with such success, that in each succeeding year, the number of films and costumes on display grew exponentially. Today, we welcome thousands of people from around the world, who visit and tour our 11,000 square-foot Museum-Galleries. This is indeed a tribute to the skill, dedication and talent of those artists we showcase. We are proud of our association with the creative people who produce magic for the film industry. As always, we salute their efforts and triumphs.
