This is a film, based
on the Obie winning play, that explores the fine edge between
freedom of expression and to what degree society can accept or
reject that freedom when it runs counter to prevailing culture.
It tells the tale of the notorious Marquis de Sade, famous French
pornographer, but brilliant author, and his imprisonment at Charenton
during the turn of the 19th century.
Sent
by Napoleon to be "cured", he lived in comparative luxury, but
was denied any way to continue to write. In this story, he has
a relationship with a working class woman, and interacts with
both a kindly Abbe, and a domineering doctor.
Jacqueline
West, designer, researched extensively for the correct costumes
of the period. Famed for her work as a fashion designer, she has
many films to her credit. She is a graduate of UC Berkley in Romance
languages, and continues to live and work in that area.
