Back Stage West is the bible for aspiring thespians that are based in Los Angeles. Published weekly, it’s a trade journal for actors that provides feature articles, industry news, film festival and theatrical reviews, along with a definitive listing of casting notices for film, television, stage, and commercials.

Feature articles are usually interviews with more established talent. A recent issue featured interviews with Patricia Heaton and Doris Roberts (both of "Everybody Loves Raymond.") The actors offer opinions on career vs. family, comedy vs. drama and how to give a good audition. Another article dealt with the ins and outs of getting representation with a manager or agent and how to make the most of the representation you’ve got.

The extensive list of casting notices is perhaps the primary reason most actors turn to Back Stage West. Here one can find information on upcoming plays, television series, films, commercials, and voice-over jobs. Each listing comes with a breakdown of what types of roles the director or producer is looking for, along with shoot dates and contact information.

Back Stage West is the sister publication of Back Stage, which focuses on the acting scene in New York and the East Coast. Articles and casting notices from both publications can be found on the website www.backstage.com.

In this edition of the ongoing Screencraft series, Landis takes on the art of costume design. She is descriptive on the subject of what a costume is and more importantly what it isn’t. This book details how costume design fits in with the overall creative process of filmmaking, how it coincides with the star being dressed, and most importantly how the work of a costume designer can sometimes influence the collection of a fashion designer.

Costume Design interviews and provide a biography of such lauded costume designers as:

James Acheson – Academy Award winner for The Last Emperor and Dangerous Liaisons
Milena Canonero – Academy Award winner for Barry Lyndon and Chariots Of Fire
Eiko Ishioka – Academy Award winner for Bram Stoker’s Dracula and designer for The Cell
Gabriella Pescucci – Academy Award winner for The Age Of Innocence and BAFTA Award winner for The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen
Anthony Powell – Academy Award winner for Death On The Nile and Tess

Costume Design is richly illustrated and contains priceless original costume sketches from these highly respected designers. These sketches offer the reader an unimagined glimpse at the creative process involved in costuming a film. Landis herself has dressed such films as Animal House and Coming To America, as well as the legendary music video for Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Other books in this series on Cinema include: Cinematography, Directing, Screenwriting, Editing, and Film Music. Whether you are a bona fide film buff or just casual viewer, this book is a very interesting read.
