Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl:

How would I get people to look at my designs?

Kristina

Dear Kristina:

It sounds like you've got your eye on becoming a Fashion Designer! In general, companies are looking for Fashion Designers who know the basics of Fashion Design, such as graduates from a fashion college like FIDM who have learned about technical sketching, draping, patternmaking, and sewing. The Fashion Designer doesn't necessarily specialize in all these skills, but she or he is familiar with them. There's a lot of background knowledge that goes into Fashion Design.

The time to get your designs seen is when you apply to fashion college. At that time, the Admissions Advisors will give you feedback. For students and graduates of FIDM, we have a great, pro-active Career Development & Placement Center that you can work with from the time you enter FIDM and all through your career in the fashion, entertainment, interiors, or graphics industries. They have leads to both full-time Fashion Design positions as well as free-lance opportunities. It's a competitive field, but if you love it, there's nothing like it!

Sincerely,
