Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I'm interested in Interior Design. What are the different ways I could find out if this career is right for me?
Ally
Dear Ally:
It's great to hear that you're exploring an interest in Interior Design! If the field has caught your eye, perhaps that's a sign that you have a bit of design talent that's yearning to get out and redecorate the world! Designing interior spaces in which people live and work is an exciting career with lots of opportunities. A degree in Interior Design from FIDM will help you investigate these. Here are some things that you can do now to learn if Interior Design is in your future:
- Look through Interior Design magazines at the newsstand and at the public library
- Watch Interior Design shows on TV such as Trading Spaces, Design on a Dime, and This Small Space
- Offer to help friends and family make their homes more inviting by rearranging furniture or adding new touches
- Go to Expo Design Center and Ikea to look at their sample rooms. When you go to the mall, check out stores like Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and Z Gallerie
- Check out the website of the American Society of Interior Designers -- ASID.org. They have info on how to decide whether being an Interior Designer is for you
- Look over the Interior Design jobs at interiordesignjobs.com to see the requirements and job responsibilities
To learn about design, always keep your eyes open. Look at your environment, and take opportunities to go into new environments to see how they are designed. For some hands-on experience, experiment on your own bedroom with your design ideas and make your space distinctively you.
Sincerely, Fashion Girl
