Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I have a slim body and no hips! Are there any particular colors or styles in pants, tops or skirts that could emphasize what curves I do have? I'm also concerned about my legs looking skinny in skirts.

Hayley

Dear Hayley:

Although you may not love your slim-hipped body, fashion-wise, you've got the most coveted shape for wearing clothes! It may be small consolation, but other girls probably envy what you consider your figure flaws.

But don't fear. There are definitely things you can do to make parts of your body look fuller. One is to wear outfits with extra detailing in the areas you want to look larger. This detailing could be anything from seaming or pockets to embroidery, pleating, gathers, ruffles, ruching, or flounces used either above or below your waist. For instance, big pockets or pocket flaps at the hip can create the illusion of a fuller bust, a curvier hip, or a more prominent backside. You will probably want to keep the bulk away from your waist area, however, so that you keep an"hourglass"shape. Blouses and jackets that are shaped, meaning they nip in at the waist and flare at the hips, also make you look curvier. Another way to add bulk to an area is with horizontal stripes, or employing stitching or layering so that the effect of horizontal lines is created.

One way to make your legs less skinny in skirts is to wear tights with them. Good tights choices for thin legs are patterned tights, light-colored tights or fishnets, cable knit tights, and those with horizontal stripes. Just stay away from plain dark tights like black, which will accentuate the thinness of your legs. Tall boots are another great way to camouflage thin legs, and tights look great with them!

Thanks for reminding us all that no matter what we are blessed with, most of us will always yearn for a more"perfect"body. Perhaps you've brought us a little closer to being happier with what we have!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
