Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I want to be an individual. Sort of like an Avril Lavigne type, but different. But not like I’m trying too hard to be different. Can you give me some ideas?

Azrina

Dear Azrina:

There are lots of ways to kick your style quotient up a notch without going overboard. Avril has a great look going, and you can develop your own from different influences that you see around you. Take a little from one place and a little from another, and viola! You've got a look that no one else has. Here are some ideas to set your wardrobe apart:

Shop in thrift stores. You'll find vintage clothes at bargain prices and you'll be the only one with your '70s, '80s, or early '90s looks. You'll have the real stuff, not the copies!

Customize your jeans with patches and fabric glue. Glue stars or flowers to the pockets or down the legs.

Play with color. Wear brights together, such as orange and yellow, green and blue, red and orange. Be the girl who's noticed in a crowd.

Wear a hat. Collect different hat styles, from buckets to newsboy caps. Always be the girl with some kind of hat.

Layer your clothes. Wear tanks over tanks, tanks over tees, tees over tees, with one shirt peeking out from under another. It's a great way to incorporate new wardrobe and color combinations, and it's also a great way to carry off tops that are a little too bare!

Wear a handful of rings, or a wrist-load of bracelets. Find inexpensive jewelry, and wear a bunch of it!

Apply a couple of these simple wardrobe tricks and see what happens. No two people will combine ideas in the same way, so your look is guaranteed original!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
