Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I have a lot of tomboy-style clothes and want to start dressing more girly. Do you have any suggestions for items that could really help my wardrobe?

Paige

Dear Paige:

It's possible to girl-up your wardrobe without buying a whole new one. Peasant and prairie-style tops are really girly, and they could fit in well with your existing denim jeans and other pants. They're also really comfortable and easy to wear, if you don't get the really tiny, sheer, tight ones. Go for the looser, less-fitted ones that aren't see-through if you want a more relaxed fit and style.

A tailored denim jacket is a great light wrap to wear this fall over your tees and peasant-style tops, and will go great with your other wardrobe pieces, even if they're not so girly. The denim jackets that are tailored to fit women are shorter, have smaller armholes, tighter sleeves and narrower bodies, and sometimes even flare out at the hips instead of tapering in. Look for them in stretch denim for a really good fit.

A denim skirt is another item that is girly but not super-hard to fit into an existing wardrobe. You can wear it with your existing tees, tanks and sweaters, and it will also look good with any new peasant tops you acquire. Denim skirts come in all lengths, from mini to knee-length to mid-calf to long. Which length, or lengths, you choose to wear is an individual decision, as all lengths are totally in fashion right now. A long denim skirt is especially great for fall and winter because you can wear it with sandals til it gets cold, then with tights and boots for cooler days.

That's it: a jacket, a skirt, a few tops, and you're set!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
