Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I love studying how mannequins are dressed in the windows at clothing stores. Is there a job in the fashion industry for me and what classes can I take in highschool for it?
Sincerely, Thomas
Dear Thomas,
I have just the career field for you-visual display. Someone has to make all those store windows look great! Visual display coordinators dress mannequins and create window displays, but that's not all. In this career, you'll be responsible for creating the entire image of a store! This means coming up with a good floor plan, creating exciting visual displays within the store to educate customers, and presenting merchandise physically in ways that will maximize sales. This field is growing fast thanks to the oversaturation of competition in our high-tech world. Stores are focusing more on giving customers an "experience." Store image and presentation has become one of the few areas where they can distinguish themselves and make customers want to return.
It's super that you are visually stimulated by your environment, since that's a necessity in this field. It's important to have a good "eye" when you work in visual display. Just like a muscle, you can strengthen your visual "eye" by taking classes in art, photography, design, and composition. Also be sure to carry a sketchbook with you at all times to capture your visual ideas and inspirations. To learn more, check out our Visual Communications Program by clicking here.
