Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
What is the "in" hemline length for skirts this spring (2001)?
Sincerely, Annabelle
Dear Annabelle,
It looks like spring is another "anything goes" season-that applies to hemlines, pant lengths, and colors. In a way, this freedom makes things easier because you can wear almost anything and still be in style. On the other hand, it's overwhelming because the lack of rules means that you have to make more decisions! Fashion hasn't always been this lenient! Seasonal style rules were much stricter for our mothers and grandmothers.
Designers are showing a lot of eighties-inspired miniskirts and hot pants for spring, but this doesn't mean that long skirts, tea-length skirts, and pretty much any length variations in-between will look off-season. Personally, I think skirts that fall just above or below the knee and show lots of calf will look especially great for this coming spring, especially when paired with a silky off-the-shoulder top!
If you feel comfortable in minis and you see them in stores in your city, then I say go with them! If you're more of an ankle-length type of girl, don't worry, you'll be fine. These days, fashion isn't so much about the hemline or the heel height as it is about creating a modern, put-together look that captures the spirit of the moment and shows off your personality!
Sincerely, Fashion Girl
