Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I am 16, wear a 34A bra, and never fit into strapless shirts and dresses. I feel really self - conscious about my small chest and it doesn't help that everywhere I look, it seems like women are flaunting their cleavage--in movies, TV, videos, and magazines. Are there outfits that I can wear that will give me more on top?

Thanks, Busted

Dear Busted,

Beauty and the bust! We aren't all waif - slim Kate Mosses, and we definitely aren't all well-endowed Giseles. The huge gap between media and reality when it comes to the portrayal of women is overwhelming and frustrating. You have to bridge the chasm with confidence in yourself. Did you know the average American woman wears a 36B bra? At 16, you're still physically developing and could easily jump up a size or two over the next few years. Give yourself some time to fill out those bustiers!

Some fashion tips for enhancing your bosom: stay away from baggy tops. Fitted shirts and dresses will show what you do have instead of hiding it under bulky clothing. Look for styles with details at the bust like gathers and smocking. Cowl-necks and draped busts work too. You can always opt for one of the many push-up bras that use underwires and padding to enhance what nature gave you. The crazy amount of money spent on these bras is even more proof of our obsession with creating cleavage. In the mean time, work on building up your self-esteem. Know that image goes way beyond bust measurements. There are plenty of sexy, stylish, amazing (normal-busted) women to be inspired by! Just look at Gwyneth Paltrow, Claire Danes, and Audrey Hepburn!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
