Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

My fashion design class is putting on a fashion show, and I am in charge of the theme. I am blank! I can't think of anything. It is on April 13, 2000. Do you know of any ideas for a theme? If you do, I would be grateful!! Thanks.

Sincerely, Themeless

Dear Themeless,

With your fashion show happening in the Spring of 2000, you can go all out with millennium mania. Your theme could be "Over The Hype" since we will be past the chaos and stress of the dawning of Y2K. You could base your theme on a futuristic movie or novel, like "Bladerunner." Another really fun theme to consider is Japanese Anime. Japanese animations are full of outrageous costumes and plots, and are very popular right now. If you do want to stick with a futuristic theme, Japanese anime and comic books offer some colorful interpretations of the future. On any given month of the year, there are holidays and festivals going on throughout the world that could work as themes for your show. Mardi Gras is in March but could easily inspire a spring fashion show. Easter, April Fools Day, and Earth Day all happen in April. Your theme could be "recycling the 20th century to save the 21st century" to celebrate Earth Day. You could go against the typical futuristic 2000 theme by using a historical theme. Is there a certain time period's fashions that you love? The fashions of the 1920's were a complete break from previous fashion tradition. You could incorporate the feeling of the 1920's into your show and relate it to fashion in the new millennium, going with a "break away from the mold" theme. Look through some costume history books for historical inspiration. Sources for fashion show theme inspiration are endless. Just a single event can trigger your imagination to build up a unique theme. Be open to ideas from unlikely sources. For example, the recent discovery of an intact frozen woolly mammoth could inspire an entire collection of winter coats! Coming up with a theme for a fashion show is a wonderful creative opportunity! Your theme will dictate the entire look of the show. Have fun with it!

Sincerely,
