Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I was just wondering...every girl has a problem with wearing the same outfit twice. Do you think that it is ok to wear the same outfit twice or do you think that whoever does it should receive a major fashion ticket from the "fashion police"?
Sincerely, Just Wondering
Dear Just Wondering,
The answer to your question depends on how much time passes before wearing the same outfit again. If you are talking one or two days, then definitely look out for the fashion police! Ideally, you should let at least one week, preferably two weeks, pass before wearing the same exact outfit to a place you spend every day, like school or work. The key to a magically regenerating closet is selective mixing and matching! Taking separate pieces and combining them with each other can give you lots more options, and will stretch your wardrobe. It's good to have a selection of solid-colored shirts, pants, and skirts to work with. With a basic black skirt, for example, you can totally change your look by changing the shirt you wear with it. Even if you wear the same black skirt two days later, as long as you change other pieces, your outfit is completely different. You can also create new looks by changing shoes, coats, and accessories like tights.
Years ago, women were forced to alter their precious few dresses for social occasions if they didn't want to wear the same outfit twice. These women became master tailors in their pursuit of wardrobe variety. At least we don't have it as bad as they did! Altering clothing is actually a great way to create an illusion of a never-ending wardrobe. You can cut long skirts short, cut sleeves shorter, dye fabrics, add lace, appliques, or trims, and change buttons, with only basic sewing skills.
If you are really concerned about getting a fashion ticket, keep track of the outfits you wear so that you don't forget and end up wearing one too often. Write down what you wear to special events and parties so you can rotate your favorite outfits.
The fashion police shouldn't ticket you as long as you stay creative!
Sincerely,
