Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
What is a girl to do when skimpy swimwear is all that is in? I've watched MTV House of Style, but all they wear is stuff that shows far too much cleavage! What is all that about, anyway??? I'm slim, but I'm also curvy. My suit has shoulder straps, it is a two-piece, but it doesn't have a string that connects one cup to the other, it has shorts and is magenta. Most guys want girls in a skimpy one. Not one with shorts. But my butt is kind of big. Is this in???
Swimsuit disaster dudet
Dear Swimsuit disaster dudet,
The reason you see so much skin showing on television is one of the fundamentals of advertising--sex sells. Television constantly bombards viewers with mixed messages. Commercials tell us to be individuals, and to be proud of our bodies regardless of size, shape, or color. At the same time, we see beautiful, scantily-clad models parading across the camera to show off the latest fashions. It can be difficult to not let this frustrating paradox affect us. We have to draw a line between television and reality, and keep our self-images firmly rooted on the reality side!
Boy-cut shorts are very in this season! They are perfect for an hourglass figure, which from your description, sounds like your body type. Boy shorts provide coverage in all the right places, especially the upper thighs and derriere, where so many of us women feel we need it the most! Boy shorts are great for sports and activity, because they don't 'creep and crawl' like bikini-style swimsuit bottoms so often do.
Boy shorts were very popular and sexy during the 1940's and 50's. Models like Bettie Page created the sexy pin-up girl image wearing boy-cut shorts. This vintage style is back full swing, looking as sexy as ever! Designers are adding accents like appliques, embroidery, beads, and lace to boy shorts, making them more feminine, playful, and sexy. So wear your swimsuit with confidence! You will look great and feel comfortable with yourself, which will glow in your personality and attitude. Have fun this summer!
