Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I am so interested in Fashion and I was just wondering what classes I should be taking in High School to increase my chances of getting into a good college. I also live in Iowa and wondered where the closest college that offers Design Programs is located.
Curious
Dear Curious,
My advice to you is to take as many art-related classes as you can while you are in high school. Learn color theory, composition and drawing skills. All will be applicable to 100's of creative careers. If your school offers classes geared towards fashion design, be sure to take them. Also consider home economics. Sewing skills are a must for a future fashion designer.
You can increase your chances of getting into a good fashion design program by strengthening your portfolio outside of school. If you have access to a sewing machine, learn to use it. You can pick up inexpensive fabric at any fabric store. You can even practice sewing on paper to save money.
Whether you're preparing projects in school or on your own, remember to keep them fresh. Make sure your designs are consistent with what's happening today in fashion. You can do this by reading fashion magazines and watching fashion-related television. Most libraries have a good selection of current magazines.
When it comes to choosing a college, be sure to compare the fashion design curriculum at various schools. Few colleges offer a professional degree program in Fashion Design. Your career counselor should be able to tell you if there are any near you.
Good luck Curious,
