When you are planning a trip, it's important to know something about your destination and the routes that will take you there. Before you hit the road, its always wise to find your destination on a map and listen to traffic reports so you can avoid congested spots? Before you take a trip, it helps to check the weather reports? Similarly, you want to make sure that the business you are applying to is a business you want to be a part of! The last thing you want to do is walk into an interview and say, "Now what is it you guys do, anyway?"

Before you apply, research the company and the position. Get to know the company's product line or service. If the company has its own website, explore it. If you know someone who has worked there, call and ask them to tell you more about the company and their experiences working there. Find out what you would be doing if hired for the position by looking up job descriptions. The more you know about the company, the easier it will be to show how you can contribute to their needs and goals in your cover letter and resume.
