The Well-Worn
Path
The Outfit
Once you've made contact and set
up an interview, it's time to think about your overall look. You
should allow yourself approximately a week to plan for and assemble everything
you'll need to for the interview. Even if you already have a closet full of
coordinating suit combinations, you still need to be sure that all details
are in order. The last thing you want to worry about on the morning of your
interview is finding a new pair of shoes or having your suit dry-cleaned!
Preparation goes a long way to make you feel your most confident. Also, once
you have these details down, you can move on to more important things like
preparing for the actual interview conversation!
| Follow
these style guideposts to look your best on the outside and feel your
best on the inside: |
| Dress
rehearsal: Do not wait until the last minute to choose an outfit!
Have a friend or family member help you decide what looks best several
days or more before the interview.
|
| Custom-tailor
to impress: Research the company you are interviewing with so you
know what is appropriate to wear. For example, if it's an eclectic alternative
clothing store, you can go for a moderately funky ensemble.
|
| Comfort
quotient: Make sure your clothing is not so tight or loose that
it makes you uncomfortable. It is distracting to constantly adjust your
clothes during the interview.
|
| Details
count: Make sure your hands are clean and manicured. This goes for
feet as well if you are wearing open-toed shoes.
|
| Tame
the mane: Style your hair so that it's neat and off your face.
|
| Scents
sense: Avoid wearing perfume or fragrance to an interview. You never
know who might be allergic to your signature scent!
|
| Pearly
whites: Brush your teeth, of course. Avoid potentially embarrassing
foods like spinach right before the interview and double check your
teeth before walking in. Avoid chewing gum, mints, and candy during
the interview.
|
| No
bag ladies: Do not carry an oversized handbag, backpack, duffel,
or tote bag to the interview. Even if you've just come from the gym,
leave it in your car and carry a small purse and portfolio case for
your resume and samples.
