The Colors & Cowboy of the American West Inspire FIDM Instructor

FIDM Instructor Patrick Harper
, who teaches Sketching, Perspective Techniques, and Presentation Techniques in the Interior Design department, has quite a life outside the classroom: he’s an exhibiting artist who creates Western-themed paintings and bronze sculptures inspired by the colors and cowboy history of the American West. “The attitude of hard work, honesty, and fair play motivates my sculpture,” says Patrick, “while the colors of the landscape, people, horses, and wildlife fill my paintings.” Initially, Patrick was a jeans-and-Hawaiian-shirt type of guy, but when he became interested in creating Western-influenced art he realized that he needed a practical understanding of its elements. To better understand the movements of the horses he took up riding, and to appreciate the mentality of the cowboy he began dressing in Western shirts, hats, and boots. This philosophy of total immersion in his subject matter has persisted, and Patrick continues to develop his style and skill sets—he now owns his own horse!

In addition to creating fine art, Patrick has held positions as Art Director in the advertising industry, where he was responsible for concept development, design direction, and presentations. As an educator, Patrick really enjoys the interactions with students that take place in his classes at FIDM. “I like the variety of students and their unique solutions to assignments,” he says. “I enjoy helping them realize their professional potential. They develop designs that I never would have thought of. This allows me to participate in their creativity.” Whether creating Western art or bringing sketching skills to Interior Design, Patrick Harper is dedicated to excellence.
