Doug brings a fascinating background to FIDM. He grew up in Northern California with a love of music and art. In school he spent many hungry afternoons dreaming about the records he would be able to buy with all the money he saved when he didn't spend it on lunch! Music was his creative outlet. After spending hours at the record store picking out new music, he would take the record home, put on headphones, and savor listening to every second of the songs as he stared at the graphics on the record cover. He traces his artistic merge of music and graphic design to those vivid aural-visual moments.
After high school, Doug enrolled in University of the Pacific in Northern California where he pursued theatre and journalism. The stage was his playground-he did everything from acting and scene painting to writing and directing. With his passion for music as strong as ever, he became an expert on the local music scene. He wrote for the entertainment section of his college paper and had fun covering concerts, movies, and other music events. After graduating with his BA in Drama and Journalism, he headed south for a new life in Los Angeles and a place in the entertainment industry.
It turned out that Doug's place was indeed in the heart of the music industry! He started out working in publicity and marketing at A&M Records, where he was mentored by some of the best professionals in the music business. He soon moved on and up to work for the All American Music Group record company for the next ten years. He was involved with anything visual that the record company needed, from advertising, posters, and in-store displays, to producing music videos! He is most proud of the gorgeous CD covers he designed for musicians on the All American record label. He collaborated with a wide range of talent, from Weird Al Yanchovic to James Brown to major rap artists like Craig Mack and DJ Yella of NWA.
During his spare time, Doug's passion is for playwriting. Many of his plays and musicals have been produced with huge success on stages in Los Angeles, New York City, and throughout the world. His play Could I Have This Dance won "Best Play of 1992" from the American Theatre Critics Association. His most rewarding moment of accomplishment came when he first saw his name on a playbill and poster. He's lived the thrill of seeing his plays' posters plastered up and down Broadway in NY City! Doug best describes his plays as "comic tragedies based on real life events."
Doug's advice to students has also served him well in his career. "Budget your time! It's so important to meet deadlines and know where your time is going. At the same time, be flexible and know that you can't plan for everything."
What does he love best about teaching at FIDM? "It's what the students teach me! I love watching students discover a process."
