Windows Media Player Installation

How do I install the Windows Media Player?

PC Installation

System Requirements: Windows Media Player 7.1 does not play on Windows 95 or Windows NT 4 operating systems.

  1. Go to the Windows Media Player download page.
  2. On the drop-down list, choose your operating system (avoid choosing a BETA version.)
  3. Click on DOWNLOAD NOW.
  4. Before the file can download, choose Save Program To Disk and then choose to save the file to your Desktop.
  5. The download will begin now and could take a few minutes.
  6. Close all other applications.
  7. Find the downloaded file on your desktop (it should have an .exe extension).
  8. Double-click to begin the installation and follow the instructions until the installation is complete.

If you have more than one browser on your computer, such as both Netscape and Internet Explorer, you may need to run the install twice. The first time choose Internet Explorer as the install location, and the second time choose Netscape.

Macintosh Installation:

On your computer, follow steps 1 - 3 ONLY if you're installing a version lower than Media Player 7.0. Otherwise, proceed to step 4.

  1. Remove the older version of Windows Media Player on your system if it exists.
  2. To do this: Trash the Media Player folder, then trash the Media Player Preferences folder, then trash the following files in the Extensions folder:

    • Acelp.net Decoder 06.5 kbps
    • Acelp.net Decoder 08.5 kbps

    • Mpeg Layer - 3 Audio

  3. Enable the The QuickTime PowerPlug extension if necessary.
  4. Go to the Windows Media Player download page.
  5. Choose Macintosh platform from the drop-down list.
  6. Click the DOWNLOAD NOW button.
  7. The file will start to download to your desktop by default (unless you specified a different download location in your browser preferences). This may take a few minutes.
  8. Double-click on the Windows Media Player file (with the .hqx extension) on the desktop to decompress it. This will produce an installer icon that should again be placed by default on your desktop.
  9. Double-click the icon to start the actual installation and follow the instructions until the installation is complete

If you have more than one browser on your computer, such as both Netscape and Internet Explorer, you may need to run the install twice. The first time choose Internet Explorer as the install location, and the second time choose Netscape.
